SPECIFIC AIMS Pain in both youth and adults is a complex, subjective and personal experience, and remains poorly understood. One particularly perplexing dimension of some forms of pain is the tendency of pain to spread outside of an affected body site to adjacent location, and then to unaffected body sites. Such widespread pain may reflect an altered spatial tuning of somatosensory processing, such that lateral inhibition is diminished, thereby allowing pain to spread. This study will involve a quantitative assessment of prospectively collected computed tomography, radiographic and patient outcomes data from multiple centers. Specifically looking at acetabular cup placement during Total Hip Arthroplasty by either traditional or robotic-arm assisted placement.
Tranexamic acid and placebo will be given during surgery to patients who have elected to undergo lumber interbody fusion on 2 or more levels. Information regarding blood loss, transfusions needed, and duration of hospital stay will be collected.
The purposes of this investigation is to 1) To determine if Robotic-arm assisted UKA (RA-UKA) allows for more accurate component placement than manual UKA (MI-UKA)and 2) prospectively assess the learning curve, radiographic, and clinical outcomes of use of the RIO system as it is incorporated into our clinical practice and compare it to historical data on manual UKAs and TKAs.
Health status information and physical activity level will be collected longitudinally on a large group of individuals who are ultramarathon runners at the time of enrollment to determine if very high levels of physical activity alter health risks compared with sedentary or moderately active lifestyles.
This study will examine alterations in muscle in individuals with hip osteoarthritis compared to individuals without hip arthritis. All individuals will receive imaging of their hip and low back muscles in order to compare differences between groups. The investigators hypothesize that there will be differences between groups and that these differences will be related to strength, functional, and balance impairments which will also be measured in all individuals.
Scoliosis is a complex 3-dimensional deformity of the spine. It may occur at any time throughout growth and development and is typically detected through x-ray imaging. Although effective at visualizing a curve, x-ray imaging is costly and may expose children to potentially harmful ionizing radiation. This is a 30 patient study to evaluate the reliability of ultrasound, an imaging technique without radiation, to effectively measure scoliosis deformities compared to the gold-standard of x-ray.
The investigators aim to perform a prospective study to evaluate the effectiveness of blind corticosteroid injections to US-guided injections for the treatment of de Quervain's disease. The results of the study will be used to validate current injection protocols or support the incorporation of ultrasonography to treat the disease.
This comparative treatment study aims to challenge a current clinical practice. Specifically, whether the use of ultrasound-guided peripheral intravenous catheter insertion results in lower post insertion failure rates with longer utility time compared to peripheral intravenous catheters (PIVC) inserted in the standard manner during the emergency department (ED), observation and in-patient stay. The research objective is to demonstrate safety and efficacy of spleen ultrasound stimulation in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) in a blinded and randomized controlled trial. Specific Aims include: - Measure RA disease activity and functional metrics during and after a 2- week course of spleen-directed daily ultrasound treatments (within-arm and between-arm assessments); and - Monitor adverse events during and after daily ultrasound treatments.
